St. Bartholomew Roman Catholic Church, Camden

Preserve New Jersey Historic Preservation Fund
Grant Award: $5,000 (2017)
Grant Recipient: St. Bartholomew Roman Catholic Church
County: Camden
Municipality: Camden

The resource is situated in the center of a historic Black settlement known as Kaighnsville, which existed as early as 1801 and grew into a thriving community of working families by the 1840s. A fire destroyed most of Kaighnsville in 1854, but it was rapidly rebuilt. During the 1930s local Catholic churches were often territorial battlegrounds in Camden’s neighborhoods; this created a significant challenge for Black Catholics in finding welcoming worship locations. In 1939, this parish was specially established for “the Colored” in Camden City. St. Bart’s is an interesting example of mid-twentieth century vernacular ecclesiastical architecture.

The Trust grant helped fund a National Register nomination to become listed on the New Jersey and National Register of Historic Places.
