Designed by architect George Edward Harny for wealthy brewer Peter Ballantine, the Ballantine House has seen few alterations since 1885. It is the only remaining 19th century residence on Washington Park, which was once ringed by houses owned by Newark's elite. The Ballantine House currently showcases the Newark Museum's extensive collection of decorative arts in period rooms, while the carriage house is vacant. The two structures are part of the Newark Museum’s 7-acre complex in downtown Newark, acquired by the museum in 1937.

In the early 1990s, the Historic Trust funded the exterior restoration of the house and restoration of four of its period rooms. This year’s Trust grant will help fund preparation of a historic structure report for the carriage house, to guide maintaining the integrity of the building and possible new use as a fire museum.
