The Battleship New Jersey, in commission from 1941 to 1991, is the country’s most decorated battleship, having served in World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War and providing shield in El Salvador and Lebanon in the late 20th century.  She is a product of the local shipbuilding and technology industries in Camden and the Greater Philadelphia area.  The ship retains a high degree of integrity and now serves as a museum, open to the general public and school children.

This Trust grant will assist the preparation of a tour route development for the below deck areas that are not currently accessible due to public safety and engineering concerns. These areas contain some of the novelty spaces and illustrate technological advances.  The proposed work will make recommendations for stabilization, restoration, access and interpretation of below-deck space.  The report will identify potential tour routes, markers, access, walkways, handrails and cost estimates for construction.
