Updike Farmstead was established in the late 17th century by Benjamin Carke II, one of the first Quaker settlers to the Stoney Brook area. The property remained in the hands of his descendents for over 150 years. The farm is along the route followed by Continental troops on their way to engage British soldiers at the neighboring Thomas Clarke farm at Princeton Battlefield. George Furman Updike acquired the farm in 1892. The Historical Society recently purchased the remaining six-acre farmstead from the Updike family.
This grant will fund replacing the roof of the farmhouse, which is the first phase of the long-term rehabilitation and restoration program that will make the Updike farm the new headquarters for the Historical Society.
