Cavalry Cottage may be the oldest extant building in the township, associated with Brig. General William Grier, cavalry veteran of the Mexican and Civil Wars. Grier spent ten years in Stafford developing speculative real estate deals for residences and roads that would serve the expanding resort industry. In 1874, their company donated a large plot of land adjacent to the cottage for a new Methodist Church.
The grant-funded work will include the demolition of non-historic materials, including the porch and dormer that were added to the small structure in the 20th century and are threatening the integrity of the cottage’s structure. The proposed stabilization project may allow the first floor to be open for brief visitation and encourage support for its restoration. Ultimately, the Historical Society hopes the building will host exhibits, visitors and researchers.
