The Eakin House is a late 18th century structure that was substantially remodeled in the 1840s in the Greek Revival style for Alphonso L. Eakin.  The building, its adjacent law offices and Gothic/Oriental style bathhouse in the back yard contribute to the Salem Historic District and are notable for their occupancy by four generations of the Eakins, a prominent Salem family.

Given to the Society in 1992, the house has been underutilized and suffered some water damage.  The grant-funded work would address the source of continuing water infiltration by repointing and capping two chimneys.  Repair of interior finishes will allow these rooms of the building to be used for storage. Rehabilitating the structure for collections storage and meeting space is a priority to the Society.
