The Demarest Railroad Station was constructed in 1872 in response to the growing rail transportation in Bergen County that transformed the town from its agrarian origins to a commuter suburb. The station was designed in the Romanesque Revival style by J. Cleveland Cady, the architect for the American Museum of Natural History in New York.
The matching grant will help fund the restoration of the roofs, east dormer, ornamental work, drainage system and slate surfacing, according to the original design. This 1872 Romanesque Revival train station currently serves as a community-meeting place for local organizations and is setting a standard for interest and quality in historic preservation in this community.
