Evergreen Cemetery was founded in 1853 as a picturesque, non-denominational cemetery, designed by Elizabeth’s municipal engineer Ernest Meyer. The original 31 acres occupied the former John and Ellen Teas farm; the barn was converted to the cemetery maintenance building and Greek-Revival house used for offices. The cemetery retains its original layout and appearance, with winding roads, iron fences, and stone benches. 

The current Trust grant will help fund the preparation of a comprehensive cultural resource master plan that will examine the conditions of the landscape, landscape furniture and gravestones as well as the original farmhouse that is actively utilized by the cemetery administration.
