Garden State Historic Preservation Trust Fund
Historic Site Management Grants
Grant Award:
$30,000
Grant Recipient:
Fanwood Borough
County:
Union
Municipality:
Fanwood
Fanwood developed, beginning in the second half of the nineteenth century, as a railroad suburb for metropolitan New York commuters with the Central Railroad of New Jersey and its associated land companies playing an important role.. Its tree-line streets with larger lots typified the Railroad Suburb. The Fanwood Park Historic District contains residences exemplifying architectural styles typical from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries including Gothic Revival, Georgian Revival, Colonial Revival, Craftsman, Dutch Colonial Revival, and Tudor Revival, among others. There is an immediate threat to resources in the district from teardowns and unsympathetic remodeling.
The grant will help fund the completion of a feasibility study aimed at developing a mechanism for maintaining historic properties within Fanwood’s Transfer of Development Rights Demonstration Program sending areas. The work product provides options for developing and implementing the program's funding mechanism.
