The church campus consists of the sanctuary, parish hall and education wing, constructed in 1892, 1925 and 1958, respectively.  The district and the church contain architecture and building types that reflect a turn of the century wealthy commuter suburb.  The oldest Unitarian Church in the state, First Unitarian was designed by architect Oscar S. Teale, who maintained an active NJ-NY practice and also performed as a magician.  He is known for his church designs.

The building is in good condition but suffers some damage from water infiltration at the roof and basement levels, drainage challenges, and destabilization of its large stained glass window on the main elevation and a deteriorated patio that serves as the parish hall entrance.

The grant will help fund the preparation of a thorough conditions assessment and nomination to the National Register of Historic Places.
