The First Presbyterian Church of Elizabeth, a complex consisting of the 18th century church, cemetery and parish house, is the site of the first English-speaking congregation in the State of New Jersey. The first church building constructed on this site in 1665 was replaced in 1724 with a church that was burned by the British during the American Revolution. The present structure was built in 1793 in a traditional New England style. The complex now hosts numerous community service programs in a struggling urban center including food, shelter, health and public group meetings.
The current grant will help fund the exterior restoration of the church, cemetery and parish house. This project is guided by a master plan that was funded by a previous Trust grant. The Master plan assessed the needs of the buildings and site and evaluated new and expanded public programs and uses for the site.
