Erected in 1883, the First United Methodist Church is one of the oldest buildings in Mt Holly's historic district. The church illustrates the classical architectural style popular in turn-of-the-century religious structures, particularly in the stained glass windows that envelop the building. These ornate opalescent windows, made popular by Louis Comfort Tiffany in the late 1880s, feature a mixture of hand-painted designs and complex geometric patterns.

In 1995, the First United Methodist Church requested funds to repair its impressive balcony window, whose rotted wooden frame, cracked glass and missing solder reflected years of deferred maintenance due to the window's inaccessibility. The loan from the Trust enabled the church to fully restore the window and prepare a preservation plan for the entire church structure.

The First United Methodist Church serves a congregation of approximately three hundred members and provides meeting space for numerous community groups, including the AARP, the Retired Teacher's Association and the Girl Scouts. Members of the congregation have volunteered to repair the church's side windows, a job consisting primarily of repainting and resurfacing.
