Capital Preservation Grant, Level II
Grant Award:
$227,595 (2004)
Grant Recipient:
Borough of Fair Haven
County:
Monmouth
Municipality:
Fair Haven
Fisk Chapel was named for a Civil War veteran that provided the land and building to the AME Bethel congregation in an area of Fair Haven settled by a free black population.   Additionally, the chapel is associated with the Fair Haven Ruling, a NJ law that required boards of education to provide equal access to public education for all children, resulting in separate but equal schools.  Structural problems resulted when the municipality moved the church to its current location in 1974.

The Trust grant will help fund the structural stabilization of the former church, exterior restoration and interior preservation of historic finishes.   When the project is complete, the building, now known as Bicentennial Hall, will be fully accessible and available for community meetings, events and concerts.
