Fleming Castle may be the last surviving 18th century building in Flemington, dating to c. 1756. The house is notable for its association with many prominent Flemington citizens, including: the borough’s namesake, Samuel Fleming; the community’s first physician, Dr. George Creed; and former U.S. Senator and Governor Samuel Southard. The Daughters of the American Revolution owned the building for much of the 20th century, and the borough of Flemington recently purchased the house with the intention of restoring and opening the building to the public.
This Trust grant will assist the preparation of a preservation plan and feasibility study. The preservation plan will help clarify the building’s long history and provide guidance for both restoration and interpretative activities. These documents will also look at accessibility issues and the potential use of the building by outside organizations
