The construction of City Hall in 1883 reflected Hoboken's growth as an industrial and transportation center. Designed by Francis G. Himpler in the Second Empire Style, the structure is architecturally significant for its monumental façade with classical detailing, typical of civic architecture in the late 1800s. In 1911, the building was enlarged with the addition of two wings at the front, a jail to the rear and the conversion of the mansard roof into a third story. During World War I, this newly created third floor was used as an armory.

The grant funds restoration and rehabilitation of interior spaces and finishes, as well as exterior work that includes masonry and front entrance porch restoration, window rehabilitation, roof repairs, and reconstruction of the perimeter iron fencing. The grant will also fund associated architectural and engineering costs, including a preservation plan that will guide future work at the site.
