Garden State Historic Preservation Trust Fund
Capital Preservation Grant, Level II
Grant Award:
$750,000 (2008)
Grant Recipient:
Hoboken Public Library
County:
Hudson
Municipality:
Hoboken
Designed by local Hoboken architect, Albert Beyer, the library was built in 1896 and the dome remains a prominent feature of Hoboken’s Church Square. The building retains its classical stone and brick façade, ornate cornice, and terracotta urns, but the terracotta has cracks and chips and the building is in need of repointing. Inside the original decorative ceilings, woodwork, and metal stairs remain.
The Trust grant will assist exterior repointing, repairing damaged masonry, metal brackets and cornices, and repairs to the entrance stairs. The project will also improve the circulation and book storage capacity in the interior. Spaces not presently used will be rehabilitated for library use.
