Monmouth Battlefield is the site of the Battle of Monmouth fought on June 28, 1778, a pivotal engagement in the Revolutionary War. Due to the historic significance of the battle, the site has been designated a National Historic Landmark, the highest level of recognition bestowed on our nation's historic sites.

The eighteenth-century battle landscape of open fields bordered by hedgerows and fence lines, however, has been concealed by years of unchecked growth of trees and brush. The objective of the project is to return the park landscape to its appearance in 1778 based on battle accounts, contemporary maps and physical evidence.

Approximately 125 acres of vegetation encroaching on cultivated fields, meadows, lanes, and fence lines will be removed; worm-rail fences will be constructed along original fence lines; eighteenth-century lanes will be reestablished; and a walking trail with wayside exhibits will be laid out in order to provide visitors with enhanced understanding of this historic site.
