Garden State Historic Preservation Trust Fund
Capital Preservation Grant, Level II
Grant Award:
$255,000
Grant Recipient:
Newark AIDS Consortium, Inc.
County:
Essex
Municipality:
Newark
Comparable to the finest offices of New York City, the Mutual Benefit Life Insurance Building is an outstanding example of corporate Beaux Art design. It is the only office building in northern Newark of this size, built in anticipation of the commercial development on the north side of Newark, which never transpired. In the 1950s the building was sold to the Catholic Diocese for a parochial school. In the 1980s the building was sold to a private property investment company who leases the first floor to the Newark AIDS Consortium and the other floors to a nursing facility. The building includes a dining hall, gymnasium, and movie theater.
The Trust grant will assist the restoration of the bronze elevator doors in what is now the facility dining room, rehabilitation of a former office as the activity room, and the creation of a wellness center inside the former north lobby.
