This surviving testament to New Jersey’s early industrial history represents the first industry to be established in what is now the German Valley Historic District in western Morris County. Built beside the Raritan River in 1751 and expanded in 1874, the mill has an unusually extensive collection of mill equipment that chronicles the evolution of milling technology through several centuries. Much of the machinery dates from its 19th century expansion and reflects the specialized nature of milling equipment in the United States during this period.

The building was near collapse in the 1980s when a group of conservationists and preservationists raised money to purchase the mill and adjacent acreage. A $5,000 loan from the Trust's Emergency Grant and Loan Fund helped fund a comprehensive preservation plan preservation, and dedicated volunteers in the Long Valley community have accomplished work on the building.

The 1997 grant helped fund completion of the watertight enclosure of the mill, including restoration of wood siding, windows, and doors.
