Building #22 is a contributing structure in the Fort Hancock and Sandy Hook Proving Ground Historic District, which has been designated a National Historic Landmark. The site played an important role in the defense of New York Harbor. Built in 1898, the building was one of five barrack buildings for enlisted men. The NJ Marine Sciences Consortium conducts research, education and outreach programming. The building is used year round by students in grades K-12. There are also undergraduate and graduate level courses in marine science.
The management grant will help fund the preparation of a preservation plan that will also make recommendations for increased accessibility. The capital preservation grant will help fund exterior restoration, a barrier free entrance, restrooms, and bring the building up to code. The improvements for ADA compliance will allow the organization to sponsor new programs for disabled and special education student groups.
