Garden State Historic Preservation Trust Fund
Historic Site Management Grant
Grant Award:
$46,500 (2007)
Grant Recipient:
Montgomery Township
County:
Somerset
Municipality:
Montgomery Township
The state acquired six farm properties from 1889 to 1920 to form the Skillman Village or NJ State Village for Epileptics, which was designed to be a self sufficient community to provide care and treatment for patients. Closed in the 1990s, the property was mostly vacant and acquired by the Township in early 2007.
The proposed work addresses the needs of the Maplewood (top), a 19th century residence, and the Smalley Theater (bottom), which was constructed in 1916 as the social and recreational landmark for the institutional community. Both properties are in need of stabilization and repair.
The grant will help fund the preparation of a Historic Structure Report for Maplewood and a Preservation Plan and Sustainable Use Study for the Smalley Theater. The reports will advise the township on the long-term preservation, use and stewardship opportunities for these structures.
