The 1902 life saving station was constructed on the site of the 1873 station, one of 9 Duluth stations designed by the same architect.  Occupied by the Coast Guard Station until 1996, the structure was sold to the borough in 2000.

The Trust grant will help fund interior rehabiliation, construction of a barrier-free entrance and facilities, installation of heating, ventilation and electrical equipment, and abatement of hazardous mateirals.  The work is guided by a preservation plan that was prepared with support from a previous Trust grant.  When completed, the structure will house some municipal offices, as well as public meeting and exhibit space.
