During the Revolutionary War, St. Michael's Church served as a barracks and a hospital, and part of the First Battle of Trenton took place in the churchyard. Built in 1706, the sanctuary was remodeled in the 19th century and now stands as a rare version of the castellated Gothic Revival Style, reminiscent of the designs of William Strickland and Thomas Ustick Walter. The Parish House, also designed in this style, was built in 1892. Its restoration was funded with help from an earlier Historic Trust grant.
This year’s Trust grant will assist the preparation of a preservation plan for the church. The plan will guide its future restoration and structural repairs. In addition to religious worship, St. Michael's engages in a number of community outreach activities, allows community groups to use its space for meetings, and hosts historical programs and sponsors its own community awards program.
