The Classical Revival style library, designed by Philadelphia architect Spencer Roberts, opened to the public in 1902.  The structure was expanded in 1915, creating the Classical styled room now known as the Trentoniana Room.  A contemporary addition in 1976 now serves as the main entry to the facility. In 1984, the lavish marble interior of the library was designated a historic landmark by the Trenton Landmarks Commission.

The roof suffered severe leakage in the fall of 2005, causing damage to interior finishes.  The roof was replaced in early 2006, but interior damage remains.  In addition, the building does not meet modern library standards for fire detection and suppression, electricity, heating and ventilation and physical arrangement of space for security and efficiency.

The grant will help fund the preparation of a preservation plan that will make recommendations to sensitively accommodate the needs of a modern library within an historic structure.
