Capital Preservation Grants, Levels I and II are offered in the 2008 Grant Round.  Read the Current Grant Schedule for more information. 
Eligible Applicants
  • agencies or entities of county or municipal government; or
  • nonprofit organizations that are certified tax-exempt and comply with New Jersey charity registration laws
Eligible Properties
  • are listed in the New Jersey or National Register of Historic Places;
  • contribute to the significance of a historic district listed in the New Jersey or National Register of Historic Places; or
  • are certified as eligible for listing by the Deputy State Historic Preservation Officer.
Ownership
Applicants must demonstrate control of the property through a deed or valid long-term lease in order to receive a grant award. Owner consent is required for application.
Eligible Activities
Eligible preservation activities include rehabilitation, restoration, preservation and certain non-construction activities related directly to the development, implementation, operation, and monitoring of historic preservation projects.
Requirement for Matching Funds
Level I Capital Preservation Grant requests may range from $5,000 to $50,000. 

Level II Capital Preservation Grant requests may range from $50,001 to $750,000. 

Grant requests of $100,000 or less are eligible for a 3:2 funding match, with the grantee providing at least $2.00 in funds for every $3.00 of grant money awarded. Grant requests of more than $100,000 will require a 1:1 match, with the grantee providing at least $1.00 in funds for every $1.00 of grant money awarded.

Criteria for Funding
The following criteria will be used to evaluate and rank applications for these grant funds:
  • Historical significance of the resource;
  • Physical condition of the property;
  • Proposed use of the site and quality of the interpretive program;
  • Quality of the preliminary planning or contract documents, including credentials of the project team, and feasibility of the budget and work schedule;
  • Ability of the applicant to match the funds requested;
  • Ability of the applicant to complete the proposed work, maintain the property, administer the grant funds, and develop programs to sustain and interpret the property;
  • Potential of the project to create jobs and to promote other preservation activity and heritage education;
  • Relationship of the project to other State and local programs that aid community revitalization, preservation of the built or natural environment, and heritage education and tourism;
  • Degree to which the project represents innovative design, programming or interpretation and extent to which the project reaches new audiences; and
  • Degree to which the project helps achieve a balanced distribution of program funds.
