The Ballantine House and carriage house were the home of wealthy brewer Peter Ballantine, and has been little altered since 1885. It is the only remaining 19th century residence on Washington Park, which was once ringed by houses owned by Newark's elite. While the carriage house is vacant, the Ballantine House currently showcases the Newark Museum's extensive collection of decorative arts in period rooms. Acquired by the musem in 1937, the two structures are part of the Newark Museum’s 7-acre complex in downtown Newark.

The 2008 Trust grant helped fund exterior repairs to the Ballantine Carriage House. The work was guided by a Historic Structure Report funded by a previous Trust grant. Two grants from the 1990's helped fund exterior restoration of the Ballantine mansion.
