Walt Whitman's Camden Tour

Garden State Historic Preservation Trust Fund
Historic Site Management Grant
Grant Award: $24,000 (2005)
Grant Recipient: South Jersey Tourism Corporation
County: Camden
Municipality: Camden

This Trust grant helped fund the preparation, marketing and implementation of a new tour that included three Camden sites: Pomona Hall, the ancestral home of the Cooper family, prominent Camden county land and business owners; the Walt Whitman House, a state-owned and managed historic site and home to Walt Whitman from 1884 to his death in 1892; and Harleigh Cemetery, a 150-acre cemetery established in 1885 as a picturesque waterfront landscaped park. The three sites offer opportunities to interpret the history of Camden from its 18th century roots to its 19th and early 20th century industrialization.

The project's goals are to create greater visibility of the sites, test the viability of tourism in the South Jersey city and encourage the development of more attractions in Camden. The bus tour was also adapted as a field trip for school-aged children.
