The Demarest Railroad Station was constructed in 1872 in response to the growing rail transportation in Bergen County that transformed the town from its agrarian origins to a commuter suburb. The station was designed in the Romanesque Revival style by J. Cleveland Cady, the architect for the American Museum of Natural History in New York. The station currently serves as a community meeting place for local organizations and sets a standard for interest and quality in historic preservation in this community.

The 2002 matching grant helped fund the restoration of the roofs, east dormer, ornamental work, drainage system and slate surfacing, according to the original design.

The 2001 grant funded the preparation of a historic preservation plan and construction documents for the exterior restoration of the building.
