Designed by Samuel Sloan in collaboration with Dr. Thomas Story Kirkbride, Greystone Park Psychiatric Hospital was opened in 1876. The building embodies Kirkbride’s theories on how to house and treat psychiatric patients. The building’s significance is derived from the architecture, the construction, the treatment concepts that influences the design and placement of the buildings, and its importance to the community.  The last patients were relocated in 2009 to a new state hospital, leaving the main Kirkbride building and a complex of dormitories and facility support structures abandoned. Despite its deteriorating condition, there is a high degree of integrity remaining.

The 2010 Trust grant helped fund the preparation of a feasibility assessment on the potential for reuse and redevelopment of the property.
