The New Milford Plant of Hackensack Water Company represents the growing demand to deliver safe drinking water to large sections of northern New Jersey in the late 19th and early 20th century. It is a rare early example of a complete waterworks with both purification and delivery. The first Pump House was built in 1882 and enlarged almost immediately following its completion. Expansions and improvements due to demand and changes in technology continued at the site until the 1950s. Although these changes drove the evolution of the architecture at the site, it has maintained the feel of the industrial Romanesque Revival style chosen by its first architect, Charles Benjamin Bush. Bergen County acquired the property in 1993 as a donation from Hackensack Water Company.

The 2023 Trust grant will help fund the preparation of a Preservation Plan update and Feasibility Study.

A 2009 Trust grant helped fund the preparation of a preservation plan that is guiding the stabilization of the water treatment building and pump house, as well as site and safety improvements, funded by two capital preservation matching grants in 2008 and 2010.
