Ocean City, City Hall

New Jersey Historic Preservation Bond Program
Grant Award: $634,046 (1995); $400,660 (1996)
Grant Recipient: Ocean City
County: Cape May
Municipality: Ocean City

Though best known as a beach resort, Ocean City boasts a City Hall that exudes the sophistication and magisterial grandeur of public buildings erected during the City Beautiful movement of the early-twentieth century. Displaying elaborate use of terra cotta, this 1914-vintage landmark was designed by Vivian Smith, a leading architect for numerous southern New Jersey coastal communities.

The 1996 Trust grant funded restoration of the west, north and east facades by reconstructing the masonry and terra cotta at the parapet, entablature and cornice. Additional work included cleaning the exterior, restoring original wooden windows, reconstructing the monumental stairs, and restoring two freestanding lamps.

The 1995 grant funded restoration of the south facade, including reconstruction of the terra cotta and brick masonry, window repair, and reconstruction and restoration of the drainage system.
