Relief Hose Company No 2 Engine House

Garden State Historic Preservation Trust Fund
Historic Site Management Grant
Capital Preservation Grant, Level II
Grant Award: $47,431 (2002); $532,444 (2004)
Grant Recipient: Raritan Borough
County: Somerset
Municipality: Raritan Borough

The Relief Hose Company No. 2 Engine House is locally significant as a well-preserved example of a Victorian-era 1894 High Gothic style firehouse. In addition to housing Relief Company No. 2, the building historically hosted many municipal activities and at times housed Borough Council chambers and the public library.

The 2004 grant helped fund restoration of interior finishes, made structural improvements, upgraded services, provided new barrier free accessible bathrooms and rehabilitated the space for continued community use. The previous Trust grant helped fund preparation of a historic register nomination, a preservation plan, construction documents and paint analysis for the property's interior rehabilitation.
